For patients with presbyopia or cataracts, there’s a new option on the market. On August 27, 2019, Alcon announced that the FDA has approved the commercial launch of the AcrySofⓇ IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL. Keep reading to learn more!
What is an IOL?
An IOL, or intraocular lens is an artificial lens put in place during cataract surgery. This is necessary because when you have cataracts, it results in a cloudy lens.
This leads to symptoms like blurry vision, light sensitivity, and halos or glare around lights. This is because, with a cataract, the lens allows less light to pass through. Over time, it makes it more difficult to see.
During cataract surgery, the entire lens of the eye is removed. Once the lens has been completely removed, it is then replaced with an IOL. Without an IOL to take the place of the cloudy lens, you wouldn’t be able to see at all.
America’s first trifocal IOL
The AcrySofⓇ IQ PanOptix Trifocal IOL is the first trifocal IOL that’s become FDA approved for commercial launch. Trifocal lenses are the most advanced IOLs currently available.
This is important because the trifocal IOL provides clear vision for close, intermediate, and far distances of viewing. With this kind of IOL, you can reduce, or even cut out your dependence on glasses or contacts.
Like other IOLs, the trifocal IOL effectively treats pre-existing vision disorders. This includes farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism.
The trifocal IOL can also be used to treat conditions like presbyopia. Presbyopia occurs when the lens becomes less flexible with age. This is the most common and likely to occur after the age of 40.
How can I get the trifocal IOL?
Westlake Eye Specialists is proud to be one of the first eye care practices in the country to offer the AcrySofⓇ IQ trifocal IOL to our patients! Dr. Vendal performed our first procedure with the trifocal IOL earlier this week.
Like all IOLs, the trifocal IOL may not be right for everyone. It’s important to talk to your eye doctor about their recommendations for you.
Westlake Eye Specialists offers our patients several premium lens options to consider. When deciding on an IOL, it’s important to take your lifestyle into consideration.

Do you want to be free of glasses and contacts after cataract surgery? Are you looking to continue leading an active lifestyle? Can you afford premium lens implants instead of a standard IOL option?
The trifocal IOL is a great option if you’re looking for visual freedom from glasses and contacts. In fact, more than 99% of PanOptix patients in the FDA clinical study said they would choose the same lens again.
If you have questions or concerns about the trifocal IOL or any IOL, talk to your eye doctor. It’s important for you to feel comfortable with whatever decision you come to!
