Why The Trifocal IOL Matters

Trifocal IOL Patient

If you haven’t already heard the news, Westlake Eye Specialists was the first practice in Austin to put in the PanOptix trifocal lens. Now, you may be thinking, why does this matter?

New technology is cool, but what’s the big deal? Well, the big deal is that it’s helping our patients see better than ever before! Let’s talk a little bit about how and why.

What makes this IOL so different?

The trifocal IOL is the first of its kind to become FDA approved. But what does that mean?

IOLs are an important component during cataract surgery. Without an IOL, patients having cataracts removed wouldn’t be able to see clearly.

Before the trifocal IOL, you had what was essentially two options. The first was a monofocal lens, which is the most basic IOL available.

Monofocal IOLs are fine, but they only allow you to see at one distance, either near or far. If you want to see the other distance, you have to wear glasses.

Then the other option was premium IOLs. Within premium IOLs, there are several different kinds. With a premium IOL, most patients no longer need glasses after cataract surgery.

The difference between the trifocal IOL and premium IOLs is how light is being split. Premium IOLs can only split light in two distances: near and far.

Patients with premium IOLs started to notice that there was a gap in their vision. This is because only two distances were being addressed.

The trifocal IOL can split light in three distances: near, intermediate, and far. By addressing the third distance, patients no longer experience a gap in their vision.

Now, they can see clearly at ALL distances. This is a big, big deal in the world of cataract surgery!

We’re setting our patients up for success using ORA and the trifocal lens

With anything new, it’s important to have someone to test it out on! We asked a current patient if they were interested in being our first trifocal IOL recipient and they were overjoyed to help us!

It’s easy to see why too: their vision was 20/200 before the procedure. The next day, they were seeing 20/25 up close and at a distance!

Before the procedure, everyone was really excited to be bringing this groundbreaking new technology to Austin. Dr. Vendal performed our first procedure using the trifocal IOL with ORA.
