Glaukos iStent Inject
Glaukos iStent Inject for Glaucoma
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) at Westlake Eye Specialists
At Westlake Eye Specialists, our mission is to protect and preserve your vision using the most advanced techniques available. If you’re living with mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma, the Glaukos iStent Inject® offers a safe and effective solution that may reduce your dependence on daily eye drops—and even delay or avoid more invasive surgeries.
Led by Harvard-trained glaucoma specialist Dr. Zarmeena Vendal, MD, we offer this advanced minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedure across all of our locations in Austin, Kyle, Killeen, and New Braunfels, TX.
What Is the Glaukos iStent Inject?
The iStent Inject is a microscopic stent system implanted during cataract surgery or as a standalone procedure. Roughly the size of a grain of sand, two tiny titanium stents are inserted into the eye’s trabecular meshwork, the drainage pathway responsible for maintaining healthy eye pressure.
By improving the outflow of aqueous fluid from the eye, the iStent Inject helps reduce intraocular pressure (IOP)—the primary risk factor for glaucoma progression.
Benefits of the iStent Inject
- Clinically proven to reduce eye pressure long-term
- Minimally invasive, performed through a tiny incision
- Typically combined with cataract surgery
- May reduce or eliminate glaucoma drops
- Designed for durable, long-term pressure control
- Covered by most insurance plans when medically necessary
For many of our glaucoma patients in Central Texas, this small device makes a big impact
Who Is a Candidate?
You may be a good candidate for iStent Inject if you:
- Have mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma
- Are scheduled for cataract surgery
- Are looking for a way to reduce or eliminate eye drop use
- Have struggled with medication side effects or compliance
- Want to delay or avoid more invasive glaucoma surgery
Dr. Zarmeena Vendal will evaluate your eye structure, glaucoma severity, and overall health to determine if iStent Inject is the right choice for you.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The iStent Inject is typically placed during cataract surgery and adds only a few minutes to the procedure.
- After the cataract is removed and the new lens is implanted
- Dr. Vendal inserts the iStent Inject through the same tiny incision
- The two stents are carefully placed into the trabecular meshwork to enhance fluid outflow
- No additional incisions or stitches are required
The procedure is performed at our outpatient surgical centers, and most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours.
Recovery & Results
- Most patients experience little to no discomfort after the procedure
- Vision typically improves as your eye heals from cataract surgery
- The stents begin working immediately to reduce IOP
- Dr. Vendal will monitor your eye pressure in follow-up visits
- Some patients may be able to reduce or stop using glaucoma drops
