Durysta® for Glaucoma
Long-Lasting, Drop-Free Glaucoma Treatment in Austin, Kyle, Killeen & New Braunfels
For many patients living with glaucoma, the daily use of eye drops can be frustrating, expensive, or even impossible due to lifestyle or physical limitations. That’s where Durysta® comes in—a revolutionary, biodegradable implant that delivers long-lasting intraocular pressure (IOP) control with just one in-office treatment.
At Westlake Eye Specialists, we offer Durysta as a convenient and effective option for patients throughout Austin, Kyle, Killeen, and New Braunfels. Under the guidance of Dr. Zarmeena Vendal, MD, a Harvard-trained glaucoma specialist, you’ll receive expert care tailored to your individual needs and long-term eye health.
What Is Durysta?
Durysta® (by AbbVie/Allergan) is the first FDA-approved sustained-release implant for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It delivers bimatoprost, a proven IOP-lowering medication, directly into the front chamber of the eye, slowly releasing the drug over several months.
Key Features:
- Single in-office implant
- Drop-free IOP control
- Sustained drug release for up to 4–6 months
- Completely biodegradable—no removal necessary
This treatment represents a breakthrough for patients who either struggle with or prefer to avoid daily eye drops.
How Does Durysta Work?
Durysta uses a tiny implant—roughly the size of a grain of rice—inserted into the anterior chamber of the eye using a pre-loaded, one-time-use applicator. Once in place, the implant slowly releases bimatoprost, the same medication found in many common glaucoma eye drops, such as Lumigan®.
- Reduces aqueous humor production
- Enhances natural outflow
- Leads to consistent IOP reduction for 4–6 months
- Eventually dissolves naturally within the eye
Durysta allows for sustained pressure control without the challenges of drop compliance.
Who Is a Candidate for Durysta?
Durysta may be ideal for patients who:
- Have open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension
- Struggle with medication compliance or have a busy schedule
- Have physical limitations (arthritis, tremors, etc.) affecting drop administration
- Experience side effects from topical drops
- Are interested in drop-free glaucoma control
Durysta is not yet FDA-approved for repeat implantation, so it’s best suited for one-time use in patients who may benefit from an extended medication break.
The Durysta Procedure: What to Expect
Durysta is performed in-office and usually takes just a few minutes.
Here’s what happens during your visit:
- Topical numbing drops are applied to ensure your comfort
- A tiny implant is injected into the front chamber of your eye
- The entire procedure is completed in less than 5 minutes
- No stitches or bandages required
- Most patients return to normal activities the same day
You may notice some mild irritation or blurred vision after the procedure, but side effects are generally minimal and temporary.
Results: How Effective Is Durysta?
Clinical studies have shown that a single Durysta implant can provide:
- Sustained IOP reduction of 20–30%
- Long-lasting effects up to 6 months (sometimes longer)
- A significant decrease or pause in the need for daily drops
Some patients even experience improved pressure control compared to topical medications. Our team at Westlake Eye Specialists monitors your results carefully and will determine if Durysta should be used in conjunction with other treatments.
Benefits of Durysta
- No daily drops required
- Consistent pressure control
- Ideal for patients with dexterity issues
- Painless, quick in-office treatment
- Safe, dissolvable implant

For patients who are not ready for surgery or struggle with adherence, Durysta offers a powerful new option for long-term glaucoma care.
