The eye is a highly developed extension of the brain. It is able to process our surroundings in the form of light particles and then create images so that we can see. Each part of the eye is a specialized structure with its own function:
Cornea
The transparent, front layer of the eye which helps to focus light on the back of the eye, this focusing ability is important in maintaining clear vision.
Lens
The oval-shaped structure in the center of the eye which also focuses light on the back of the eye, this is where cataracts can grow.
Retina
The back layer of the eye made up of nerve cells that process light and transmit information to the brain, this is how an image is created.
Optic Nerve
The extension of nerve cells from the retina which connects the eyeball to the brain.
