01 — Overview

A modern answer to persistent eye-surface healing.

BIOVANCE® 3L Ocular is a thin, biological membrane derived from carefully processed human placental tissue. The cells are removed, leaving behind only the natural healing scaffold — three delicate layers laminated together — that your body recognizes and works with as it heals.

It's the only triple-layer decellularized basement membrane available for the eye — designed to provide protection, structure, and a foundation for new, healthy tissue.

Unlike older amniotic membrane products, BIOVANCE 3L Ocular has no symblepharon ring, can be stored at room temperature, and goes on the eye in either orientation — meaning it's ready when you need it, without unnecessary discomfort during your healing.

02 — Conditions Treated

When BIOVANCE 3L Ocular may be right for you

Our physicians may recommend BIOVANCE 3L Ocular when the surface of the eye — the cornea or conjunctiva — needs additional support to heal properly. It is most often used for:

i.

Persistent Epithelial Defects

A non-healing wound on the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye. These can develop after injury, surgery, infection, or from chronic dry eye, and won't close with standard treatment alone. BIOVANCE 3L Ocular acts as a protective scaffold so new, healthy tissue can grow.

ii.

Pterygium Repair

A pterygium is a fleshy growth on the white of the eye, often caused by years of sun and wind exposure — common in Texas. After your surgeon removes it, BIOVANCE 3L Ocular helps cover the area, supporting smooth healing without the need for sutures or glue.

iii.

Ocular Surface Reconstruction

For more complex cases — including fornix reconstruction and recovery from severe dry eye, chemical injury, or scarring — BIOVANCE 3L Ocular can serve as a biological covering that protects the underlying tissue while it heals.

03 — Why Patients Prefer It

Designed with your comfort in mind.

Earlier amniotic membrane treatments often required a hard plastic ring placed against the surface of your eye — uncomfortable, and frequently a source of headache and irritation. BIOVANCE 3L Ocular was developed to remove those drawbacks.

No Plastic Ring

BIOVANCE 3L Ocular doesn't use the symblepharon ring associated with eye pain, headache, and discomfort during the healing window.

Ready When You Are

Stored at room temperature, the membrane is on hand at our Austin practice — no waiting for thaw or special preparation when treatment is needed promptly.

Rigorously Tested for Safety

Aseptically processed and terminally sterilized, with post-sterilization testing confirming the absence of bacterial and fungal pathogens before it ever reaches your eye.

Stronger Cell Adhesion

In laboratory testing, the tri-layer design supports stronger adhesion and greater proliferation of corneal cells compared with conventional approaches — meaning a more supportive healing environment.

07 — Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about BIOVANCE 3L Ocular.

Patients commonly ask us these questions before starting treatment. If your question isn't covered here, our team in Austin is happy to talk it through with you directly.

What is BIOVANCE 3L Ocular?

BIOVANCE 3L Ocular is an advanced biological membrane used by ophthalmologists to support healing on the surface of the eye. It is made from carefully processed human placental tissue with the cells removed, leaving only the natural healing scaffold — three delicate layers laminated together.

At Westlake Eye Specialists in Austin, our physicians use it to help patients heal from non-healing corneal wounds, after pterygium removal, and during ocular surface reconstruction.

How is BIOVANCE 3L Ocular different from older amniotic membrane treatments?

Older amniotic membrane products often required a hard plastic ring (called a symblepharon ring) placed against the eye, which patients commonly described as uncomfortable and a frequent source of headache. BIOVANCE 3L Ocular has no plastic ring.

It can also be stored at room temperature, so it is ready when you need it without needing to be thawed. The tri-layer design also supports stronger cell adhesion in laboratory testing compared with conventional approaches.

What conditions does BIOVANCE 3L Ocular treat?

BIOVANCE 3L Ocular is most often used for non-healing corneal wounds (persistent epithelial defects), pterygium repair, and ocular surface reconstruction — including fornix reconstruction and recovery from severe dry eye, chemical injury, or scarring.

Your Westlake Eye Specialists physician will examine the surface of your eye and determine whether it is appropriate for your specific condition.

Is BIOVANCE 3L Ocular safe?

BIOVANCE 3L Ocular is aseptically processed and terminally sterilized, with post-sterilization testing confirming the absence of bacterial and fungal pathogens before each membrane is shipped.

As with any procedure, talk with your physician about your specific medical history and any allergies. The product is not appropriate for patients with known hypersensitivity to BIOVANCE 3L Ocular or for use on clinically infected wounds.

Does the BIOVANCE 3L Ocular procedure hurt?

Most patients tolerate BIOVANCE 3L Ocular placement well. Because there is no plastic ring on the eye surface — a common source of discomfort with older amniotic membranes — many patients report less irritation during the healing window.

Your eye will be numbed before placement, and your physician will discuss exactly what to expect for your specific situation.

How long does it take to heal after BIOVANCE 3L Ocular?

Healing time depends on the condition being treated and your individual response. Many patients see meaningful improvement within one to two weeks, though full recovery can take longer.

Your Westlake Eye Specialists physician will outline a follow-up schedule and let you know what is normal at each stage of healing.

Who is a good candidate for BIOVANCE 3L Ocular?

BIOVANCE 3L Ocular may be appropriate for patients with corneal wounds that have not healed with standard treatment, those needing pterygium repair, or those undergoing ocular surface reconstruction.

It is not used on clinically infected wounds or in patients with known hypersensitivity. Schedule an evaluation with our team to find out whether it is right for you.
