BIOVANCE® 3L Ocular is a thin, biological membrane derived from carefully processed human placental tissue. The cells are removed, leaving behind only the natural healing scaffold — three delicate layers laminated together — that your body recognizes and works with as it heals.
Unlike older amniotic membrane products, BIOVANCE 3L Ocular has no symblepharon ring, can be stored at room temperature, and goes on the eye in either orientation — meaning it's ready when you need it, without unnecessary discomfort during your healing.
Our physicians may recommend BIOVANCE 3L Ocular when the surface of the eye — the cornea or conjunctiva — needs additional support to heal properly. It is most often used for:
A non-healing wound on the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye. These can develop after injury, surgery, infection, or from chronic dry eye, and won't close with standard treatment alone. BIOVANCE 3L Ocular acts as a protective scaffold so new, healthy tissue can grow.
A pterygium is a fleshy growth on the white of the eye, often caused by years of sun and wind exposure — common in Texas. After your surgeon removes it, BIOVANCE 3L Ocular helps cover the area, supporting smooth healing without the need for sutures or glue.

As with any procedure, talk with your physician about your specific medical history and any allergies. The product is not appropriate for patients with known hypersensitivity to BIOVANCE 3L Ocular or for use on clinically infected wounds.
Most patients tolerate BIOVANCE 3L Ocular placement well. Because there is no plastic ring on the eye surface — a common source of discomfort with older amniotic membranes — many patients report less irritation during the healing window.
Your eye will be numbed before placement, and your physician will discuss exactly what to expect for your specific situation.
Healing time depends on the condition being treated and your individual response. Many patients see meaningful improvement within one to two weeks, though full recovery can take longer.
