The PROKERA® device is rinsed with a sterile eyewash prior to insertion into the eye. Once sterilized, your doctor will apply topical anesthesia to the eye to ensure no pain or discomfort during the procedure. Your upper eyelid will be pulled up, and you will be asked to look down.
The PROKERA® device is then inserted into the eye, upper eyelid first, then into the lower eyelid. Once the eye is sufficiently healed, your doctor will remove the PROKERA® device. The healing of the cornea can be monitored even while the device is inserted, and healing time depends on the initial damage done to the eye.
